Rules of Lyrics

Dave's Rules of Lyrics: Rhyme

1. Thou shalt not rhyme "voice" with "choice".
2. Thou shalt not rhyme "girl" with "world".
3. Thou shalt not rhyme "change" with "rearrange".**
4. Thou shalt not rhyme "think" with "drink" (and don't try to finesse it with gerunds or participles!).
5. Thou shalt not rhyme "stars" with "Mars", unless you mean the candy bar.
6. Thou shalt not rhyme "morning" with "warning".
7. Thou shalt not rhyme "remember" with any month except March.
8. Thou shalt not rhyme "moon" with "June", unless you are Joni Mitchell.
9. Thou shalt not rhyme "arms" with "charms".
10. Thou shalt not rhyme "heart" with "part".

** Nor shalt thou rhyme it with "strange", and that goes for "exchange" too. Try "orange". If you can write a successful quatrain rhyming "change a ton" with "orangutan", you've got something happening. Better yet, use "tongue".
