Got a friend asking for advice on how to get in contact with a publisher or agent. He's a first-timer wanting to sell a fantasy novel. I don't know, but I think I know people who could suggest where to start...

Have him look up a copy of The Writer's Market 2009 and he'll find a number of options. Most publishing companies don't take un-agented manuscripts, though.

Not 100% what you are looking for, but this might also be helpful to your friend. (Writing advice from a new author, whom I am hoping wins a Campbell @ the 2010 Worldcon.)

I recall her mentioning how to find an agent at one point too.

Many if not most genre publishers still accept unsolicted manuscripts. Have him check who publishes most of what he reads and send it there -- the theory being you write what you like to read.
